Good ideas there and thanks for the info.
The only thing I'd add is to mention when you put new strings on give them a bit of a stretch by placing 2 fingers under each separate string and giving it light 'tug' and work your way up the neck.
This helps to eliminate the 'slackness' in new strings so you don't have to spend so much time tuning up your guitar with new strings.
cheers

They are starting to grow on me. It's taken years, but...what can I say. Some of their more unique tracks, many that are mentioned in this post (Kashmir, D'yer Maker) were just as influential in the spread of "world music" as George Harrison was. So yeah, you can't argue with such a wide ranging influence.

Fun piece & I certainly agree that Led Zep is one of the greatest ever. However, I think Plant's singing definitely takes precedence over the lyrics, which were often a hodgepodge of "re-purposed" words. When The Levee Breaks, for example, is pretty much word for word from Memphis Minnie's original. Plant was certainly great at painting an atmospheric picture in songs like No Quarter, Achilles Last Stand, Kashmir, Immigrant Song, etc., but it was really his voice that sold the songs. Cheers, rock on.

Ultimately I think the focus on "vintage" is not appropriate. The focus should be on analogue and a certain type of analogue, a cheap sound card has analogue components inside (small DIP8 operational amplifiers buffering the output from the D/A to the TRS jack outputs as a sole example). It stands to reason that vintage equipment will suffer the usual degradation of components and reliability issue. The real magic from analogue comes from the circuits that were designed during these investigative years. In modern equipment distortion has been designed out and this is the very attribute which is sought after and as such there is a lot of high end analogue audio equipment using the circuits of the past. Class A circuit topology, high current large geometry transistors, over specified power supplies, audio transformers and valves. This equipment is not as easy to mass produce and does not sell in vast quantities so it cost considerable money.

Degredation is also a focus but you omit the subjective enhancement that by far outweighs the degradation (which is virtually nil with superb DA and AD conversion). Do you think technically aware mastering engineers throughout decades would overlook this point, no because the fact remains is that it sounds better and the vast majority of quality mastering studios utilize high end analogue equipment. (and it need not affect their prices either)

We would all like to think Liquid Mix is the same, FACT: emulations do not cut the mustard. I can say this as a mastering engineer myself. I would love to use a low cost digital device if it had the capability of enhancing depth, adding width, if it was possible to overload gracefully, if it produced the same thickening enhancement as an audio transformer but it does not. This is why high end analogue mastering studios have the edge with the sonic sound palette before even reaching for the eq or compression controls.

I dont think the independent record stores will ever die out. My father has been running an electronics store at a farmers market for 30 years. Growing up I swore he would never sell records and Here I am 30 years later helping him expand into a new place that is going to have a Records/Viynl room just for this type of stuff. Everytime I would stop by he would have atleast two people flipping through his records.. I am still amazed.. I am not a collector or anything but if anyone else is..this is his page I created for him.www.facebook.com/KemnerEnterprises

The most important thing that a lot of independent artist must focus on in this new indie industry is marketing. They need to have an audience that belongs to them and only them as far as music is concerned. " Them " is plural.

I reckon that when it comes to online retail - Zazzle or Spreadshirt provide a decent enough deal. If you can source a local screen printer, then a platform like Bigcartel or Goodsie might be a better option.

And nowadays the Wordress Shopping carts are getting very user friendly. (even a couple of free store themes out there where they link to Paypal/ Google checkout - removing all those SSL headaches too)

One idea that comes to mind if using a Zazzle storefront -how about running a contest on your site "show us the most unusual product with our band logo on it you bought" - win free schwagg. A great little attention getter, and hey, they have to buy a product too ;)

Great article. While it is a great idea to get a fast merch store up and running, the downside to 'on demand" storefronts is pretty high base costs, which either push your profits down, or make the products seem expensive.

Also, be careful when setting up a Zazzle (or indeed cafepress)store, limit your product line to your best design, and keep the product line compact and relevant. A store that has every single product with your logo on it just because it costs you nothing to do, well, it ends up being too much for the browser, and looks like one of those "wait! there's more" as seen on TV commercials.

Those caveats aside, Zazzle isn't a bad option - not the best in the world, but not the worst either.

I really appreciated the knowledge you gave in your "4 Strategic Rules Of Waging War In Today’s Music Industry".

I agree that having the proper resources, connections, and social media outlets are the key for the a musician's success. If he/she wants any chance in being heard, the must know the golden rule of networking, "It's not about who you know, it's about who knows you."

However, I'm not sure I follow you on making rash decisions merely because time is of the essence. Some things are worth the wait, and when someone's artist image is on the line, time is definitely something that may require flexibility. Not that you want to keep the world waiting, but you also don't want to represent yourself falsely just because you're in a hurry to get famous.

Thanks for sharing your 4 rules! I plan to apply them to my own strategy.

We don't need to be concerned about how much memory (mobile or otherwise)a device can hold anymore - music is stored in the clouds now....it's only a question of which service you'll use...they all have phone apps - cloud storage makes devices like the ipod totally unnecessary for every day use - Spotify's my fave - what's yours?

Good post. I think you covered it all. It would also be a good idea to have a collection of music to take inspiration from, but that is quite obvious (to me at least).
I just want to add a little to point 8, if that's okay.
There are many good lessons on youtube. One guitarist in particular comes to mind: http://www.youtube.com/user/musichopper.
His newer videos don't contain too much lessons, but if you watch his earlier videos, there are some really good lessons on music theory, songwriting and technique. Some are made for beginners, others are for intermediate/advanced level.
Another site that I have used is this one: http://www.cyberfret.com/
You can find something good there whether you are a beginner or an advanced guitarist.
Lastly I just want to say that while there are many good resources online, the best way to learn, i think, is by having a competent teacher who will teach you based on how you progress and how you learn best.
For some more tips (if you are a beginner), feel free to check out my article on how to get started playing an instrument: http://listenmusicdaily.blogspot.com/2011/08/how-to-get-started-playing-instrument.html

I think Google+ has the potential to be very cool, and I'm enjoying playing around with it. It will be interesting to see how bands end up making use of it, and what the business profile looks like.

It's already seeming to me that we'll end up with multiple google+ accounts: personal, band, blog, etc.. I have to say I'm not thrilled about having another set of accounts to maintain, but we'll see how it plays out.

Abe,

Thanks for stopping. t is not possible at this time. Right now you can only do a personal page. Word is that Google is going to roll out a "business" type page eventually. For now, I personally am just using my personal page as my artist page. Since I am solo it really doesn't matter but I can see if you are in a band or are branding yourself separately but you will have to wait and keep your eyes open on that.

Hi Paul: Here's a great answer to your question: Beck! Listen to anything by him...he's got the 10 second rule down to a fine science and he's always 'fresh, interesting and truly original'. Of course there are songs and artists who break this rule and are successful, but if you're competing for attention (be it with a label or an audience) the best bet is to capture their attention in the first 10 seconds. It's an old rule...popular long before the Beatles...think of the early days of radio...Frank Sinatra, etc. Radio defined 'popular' (pop) music: catchy, memorable - like a commercial - commercial radio...sound familiar :-) I think in many ways it takes a more seasoned artist, so to speak, to compose a song that's instantly catchy and manages to keep the entire piece interesting and not redundant. Thanks for your input Paul and Corey - provocative subject for sure.

Thanks for your thoughts Paul. Personally, I think there is a fine line. Plus, what might work for one artist may not work for another. It is about finding a balance between knowing your audience and keeping it fresh.

Interesting post. The likes of The Beatles were certainly pioneering rather than following others in the charts at the time.

I agree with the requirement for near-instant appeal for music which is aiming to be played on commercial radio. The reality is that deviating too far from familiar territory will lead to the listener changing the station quickly, as you mention.

But I question the value of this rule in creating fresh, interesting and truly original music - rather than more of what's been heard before.

I completely agree. Live show can make or break an artist/band! About a year ago I saw one of my favorite front men go solo. I liked a few tracks off his album but his less than amazing live show left me very underwhelmed, ultimately making me rethink the new album entirely. I'm still on the fence as to whether or not I like him solo. On the other hand, I recently saw another solo artist live whose music isn't really my cup of tea, but he brought such an amazing entertaining live performance that I went and downloaded his album the next day. And I am still enjoying it to this day. So I agree, you can bring all the bells and whistles you want to the stage now, but will people still be eating up the same shtick 10-15 years from now? There is an art/skill in a good live show, and if you do it right you can pull it off w/ hardly any bells. I think a real good artist knows how to deliver, but it takes practice.

I've always thought an excellent live show is the big differentiator with bands. It takes a ton of willpower to play a crazy show, drive all night to the next town, and have enough energy to do it again. Especially on little to no sleep or food.

It drives me crazy to see bands that put no effort or thought into their live performance. Rehearsals are more of a social drinking time more so than a crafting of live skill.

Chris,

I wonder what the platform "page" will be for each artist. And bringing fans from established social media outlets may be a pain because of the impersonal nature of Facebook fan pages. Unless in addition to mass adoption they find you on google plus. Some kinda gimmick to bring them over?

Good insight!
